The Hampton Sack is located in an area of the Town of East Hampton known as Springs. Springs, NY gets it name from a spring that fed a small creek going into the harbor. The cottage has an interesting and rich history. Its original owner Captain Christopher Herrington was a nature lover, seaman and fisherman. He decieded to build ”The Sack” close to the bay where he housed his beloved boat. He could be seen leaving ”The Sack” in the early morning to begin fishing for a profitable catch that day. The fisherman who lived in the area supported their families on the wear of their unsuspecting catch they sold each day. It was an honest, simple existance and this daily lifestyle is beautifully reflected in the quaint, diverse cottage that the build by hand throughout Springs.

In the early 1900?s Springs was mostly a wooded area wth only a small amount of cleared land for residential living. Two brothers, Frederick and Albert Gallatin, brought the field and beach portion that is today know as ”Maidstone Park.” The brothers would vacation here during the summer until 1911 when the sold it to the town of East Hampton for one dollar. The town promised the family that they would it a public park and to the dayit is often used for sporting events and recreational activities.

Today Springs is famous for a mixture of its mega mansions and historic weather beaten beach cottages. It is also the home of artistic crowds pas and present, most notable painters such as Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning.
